I know it’s been a while since my last post, I asked you all to wish me luck with my exam, and it went tits up.
First of all, alongside me clearly not preparing enough with studying, the exam board used a new proctor system (think that’s the right word?) and the system crashed. It meant many people suffered glitches and errors on the online exam. SO instead of a 3-5 day wait for results, we were all told on day 2 that either we’d get a pass result or a free resit due to the errors. So I either failed based on my lack of knowledge (likely) or the new system, we’ll never know.
In an update from that situation, I resat the exam on Monday and actually thought it went well. Turns out, it didn’t. It’s not a percentage type of pass it’s an overall grade and my weak areas were ‘health promotion and public safety’ and ‘therapeutics’. So balls. Not an ideal outcome and in all honesty, the cherry on the cake for Alberta. I thought moving here would be a dream and I’d never look back but boy, it’s been far from it. I have a few options now.
I retake the exam and somehow pass even though I have no idea how I can improve in those areas, it’s just so specific and so tough.
I take a PCP spot in Toronto, go back to a bustling city and potentially work my way up.
I come home embarrassed with my tail between my legs.
I think option 2 is my preferred, hiring begins Jan 6th and I just want to feel settled somewhere. There’s no guarantee I’ll even get that job but it’s a downskill so I’d be hopeful.
I’d love to sit here and tell you about all the great trips I’ve been on, all the mountains I’ve been up but right now I’m just feeling deflated. I’m sorry if this is putting anyone off doing the same, my advice would be not to move here until you’ve attempted the exam (I didn’t know it would be so tough to work without it). Or to best honest, trying an easier province to transition into such as BC.
Anyway, you might hear from me again soon, I might drop off the radar, who knows.

For what it’s worth, coming back after giving it a go isn’t something to be embarrassed about. You tried something new, something which the majority of ambulance clinicians in the UK would never try.
Also remember that coming back doesn’t necessarily mean back to a busy city like London. Personally I work in Reading way for a SCAS private provider and find it refreshing compared to some places I’ve worked who run you ragged and send you miles out of area **cough cough** EEAST.
Have you heard of MasterYourMedics? It's from an Alberta-based group of medics and includes ACP COPR test preparation that might help you. There's also two practice exams that COPR provides which closely resembles the content of the exam that could help guide your studies.
It's a tough exam! Hopefully it doesn't weigh too heavily on you. Canada is full of wonderful opportunities!
